The alewives have arrived at Webber Pond outlet in Vassalboro
Last weekend when I checked the Webber Pond outlet dam I didn’t see a single alewife. Tuesday afternoon it was a very different story. The pool immediately below the dam was nearly overflowing with alewives waiting for the gates to the fishway to be opened. The photos and movie clip tell the amazing story. I have been on site four times this week and not once has the fishway been operating. It’s not exactly clear to me if any of the thousands of alewives have reached Webber Pond. For a variety of reasons, including preventing invasive fish from entering Webber Pond, the Department of Marine Resources wants a person observing the fishway whenever it’s open. Okay, but the alewives are here so get someone out there!
