Professional and personable, Richard is a great guide. His knowledge of the river and its fish coupled with super-competent boat handling skills, resulted in a very enjoyable and successful day on the water. In early July, Dick hosted us for an awesome Saturday on the Kennebec. My 17 year-old, Jack, is a devoted spin fisherman, and I’m a novice fly caster. Both of us had feisty smallmouths on the line for most of the day, and Jack also landed several schoolie stripers. As a guide, Dick is a great combination of host, teacher and observer. He showed me casting and line control techniques that I used in fresh and salt water all summer long. Yet he was genuinely curious to learn from Jack what combinations of soft plastic colors and rigging were working. We fished from his drift boat, he waded with us for the evening bite, and he even gave us tips where to fish from shore the next day. I’ll be back next summer with my younger son.

If you’ve ever been on a guided fishing trip where it was pretty apparent that the guide had done the trip too many times and it was an effort for him to act interested, you know how much that can dampen your excitement. Well, Dick Behr is anything but that! Dick guides part time, builds beautiful wooden drift boats by hand (which you fish out of), and seems to be as enthusiastic about being on the river as you are. I am a moderately experienced fly fisherman and my partner was a novice, and Dick could not have been more accommodating to both of us. He certainly is just the right balance between expertise, courtesy and just an enjoyable guy with whom to spend the day on the river. Isn’t that what it’s all about after all?

My friend and I fished with Dick Behr on a drift-boat trip on the Kennebec River in July 2014. The water was a little too high for wading, and not the ideal conditions, yet with Dick’s expertise and knowledge of the river, we caught about 60 bass on flies.
