Local Activities
When you are not on the water there is plenty to see and do in this region of the state. Here are some of my favorite places and activities:
Want to go for a hike?
The Camden Hills is about an hour long drive from central Maine and offers a wide variety of hiking opportunities, like the Camden Hills State Park. Close to Camden is the Georges Highland Path which boasts spectacular hiking trails ranging from a walk in the woods to a scramble up Ragged Mountain in Rockport.
If you are less ambitious, but want to enjoy panoramic views of Penobscot Bay, take the short walk up one of the trails leading to the Beech Nut, a sod-roofed stone hut atop Beech Hill in Rockport.
After your hike, treat yourself to lunch or dinner in one of the many restaurants in Camden, Rockland or Rockport. Sea Dog Brewery in Camden is a local favorite and remains at the top of my eatery list.
Maine State Museum
It’s raining and outdoor activities are not in the cards. Why not check out the Maine State Museum in Augusta? It’s a wonderful museum with many outstanding and unique Maine exhibits. There are several exhibits about Maine’s people and resources. One of my favorites is the award-winning exhibition which features a working three-story water-powered woodworking mill. As a participant in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program, I am often looking for rainy day activities. We recently spent a Saturday wonderful afternoon in the Museum and ran out of time before taking it all in!
How about lobsters and clams on the coast?
My wife and I rarely allow a summer to pass without a drive south on Route 32 to the Muscongus Bay Lobster Pound in the village of Round Pond in Bristol, Maine. Enjoy your lobsters and clams overlooking Muscongus Bay. It doesn’t get any better.
