June has been lots of fun on Maine’s rivers
June has been a busy month for Three Rivers Guide Service. Hey, I am not complaining! Far from it. It’s been lots of fun and the smallmouths have certainly done their part. Aside from a few rain storms and an occasional unforgiving wind, the weather has been fantastic for casting flies and lures to the abundant smallies. Last week I was fortunate to spend a pair of days on the Penobscot and two days on the Kennebec River. After completing a three day trip with a returning client, I managed to get out and enjoy a couple of afternoons on the Kennebec. On Saturday I swam a short section of the Kennebec with intentions of fishing the so-called Kennebec River flats. This section is characterized by several gravel islands, abundant shallow productive water and a sufficient number of cruising smallies to make just about anyone happy. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to catch more than my fair share of smallies, while taking in the Kennebec’s abundant wildlife. July is looking like another busy month. Based on the number of returning adult shad in the river, it won’t be long before we begin to see the smallmouths chasing the juvenile shad. A dead drifted Todd Wiggle Minnow will likely fool a few fish, including a striper or two.
